Downsizing - An Inside Look
Many of our clients have been in their current home for many years and are looking to move to a simpler lifestyle. As a result, many decisions need to be made regarding which belongings they should be taking with them and what to do with all the remaining items in the home. This daunting task is made easier by the team at A Smooth Move.
How exactly does the down-sizing process work?
In some cases our clients want to down-size before the move - if, for example they want to list their current home with a real estate agency before their move. Others prefer to wait until after their move to begin the down-sizing process. Each way has its benefits and depends on the individual situation. Regardless of the chosen way, our team leaders and dedicated staff carefully help families sort through the years of treasures and memories. We have the experience to help our clients decide which pieces would fit best in their new home as well as which items can be sold, donated or disposed of.
How can someone other than family know if an item is precious or has historical value?
We are asked this question very often! In some cases, we are working directly with family members during the sorting process. Many times, we are trusted to do the sorting without help from the family. In either case, our expertise through helping hundreds of families through the down-sizing process aids us in making sure we set aside items that may by precious to the family or have historical significance.
What is done with the items the family no longer wants to keep?
We remove items from the home that are no longer wanted. We disposition items in the following order: 1. we can sell items through our QuickSell process on Craigslist, local consignment shops or to public auction, 2. items that cannot be sold are donated through the local charity of the client’s choice, and 3. items not fit to be re-used are taken to the county recycling center.
We are Rochester’s recognized experts in helping older adults with their downsizing and moving needs!
