Moving Tips "Packing to Move”
As move day approaches, many people start collecting all sorts of old boxes, bags, and newspaper. STOP! This month, we will look at how to protect your belongings during a move.
Cartons – You need to know that most items that go into the moving truck need to be safely packed in cartons. These cartons come in three basic sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. This allows the movers to safely stack the cartons in the moving truck. All of your cartons need to be closed on bottom and top. It is nice to use the Smalls for books, and heavy dishes. Mediums are good for most kitchen items, display items, and storage closets. Larges will handle bedding, towels, and unusually shaped items. Do not let these cartons become too heavy. Books in a Medium sized box are never a good thing! Other cartons that we provide at A Smooth Move, are picture/mirror packs, wardrobes, and dish packs. All clothing can stay on their hangers, in Wardrobe cartons. No need to fold to pack and iron at unpacking time. Packing materials- When doing any packing, you need to purchase plain, white newsprint. This is paper with no ink on it. It is a sad thing, when unpacking, to have to wash every item, because they are dirtied with newspaper ink. Also, the packing paper is thicker and better protects your treasures. Other materials that you may want to use are tissue paper for those delicate items and bubble wrap for figurines with parts that can break easily. Marking Cartons- After cartons are taped shut, you will want to mark what room the items should be put in when they come off the truck, on the side of each carton. In addition, you might want to write what items are inside the carton. If it is a carton that does not need to be unpacked in the near future, putting a * on it will remind you that it can wait to be dealt with later. Plastic Bins- The only items that should go into plastic bins are liquids. These bins are not made for very heavy items, as they easily crack. They do not stack well on movers carts, which leaves a risk on the bins tipping over during the moving process.
The last thing that you need to know is that “client packed” cartons are not covered under your movers insurance. At A Smooth Move, we specialize in our packing and unpacking techniques. Our careful and efficient employees will see that your cherished belongings make it safely to your new home. Call today to set up a consultation and find out how we make moving a pleasant experience.
“..your presence was an answer to my prayers for help, truly, and I will forever be grateful for your willingness to roll up your sleeves and do what it took to get my parents moved!” - Claudia S.
